Great Reading for Moms

There are millions of books available to parents and I have not even come close to putting a slight dent in what is available.  But here are a few books I have read and can recommend…hope you enjoy!

I loved this book because it was such an easy and fun read.  It was actually the first book I read after finding out I was pregnant and it offered a lot of great resources and tips.  Many pregnancy books, in my opinion, read so much like a text book and this was certainly a breath of fresh air in that respect.  I also love that throughout the book the author provides recommendations for "Moms on a Budget," "Eco-Minded Mamas," "Dads are the New Moms," and "Stuff to Drool Over."

Yet another fun and very easy read.  This book was truly a "page turner" to me.   This book follows the observations of the author as she lived in Paris with her young children and reads as a sort of memoir.  It is also not quite a "how-to" book and if you are looking for "all of the answers" to parenting, this isn't it.  I love the philosophies on sleep, eating, and treating babies with respect and giving autonomy. As I am writing this, I am actually having the urge to re-read it because I truly loved it so much!

This book was recommended to me by a parenting coach and it has a lot of very interesting and unique information.  For anyone who has had children, you realize how incredibly different they all can be at a very early age (duh, they are all human beings and all humans are different, but I have been very surprised as a mom how early the differences are evident).  The book starts out with a test that allows you to rate your child on the nine most inherent traits (ie. Sunny vs. Somber, Slow Adapting vs. Quick to Adapt, etc.).  Once rated, your child will typically fit into one or a few of the different personality types that you can read about.  Each personality is explained in detail and then the book gives tips on how to work with your child's temperament to receive the best results and have a more positive day!

This book was recommended to me by the aforementioned parenting coach and was an equally great read. The only draw back to this book… it is over 500 pages (but at least 100 of them are recipes!).  Ellyn Satter is a world renowned expert in eating and feeding and has both an institute for research and has authored many books on the subject.  Her ideas around feeding are very different than anything I have ever read, but they truly make sense.  Ellyn's basic idea is that we create picky eaters and "favorite" foods (ie. mac 'n cheese, cookies, chicken fingers) by making them "special occasion" foods or having negative attitude about feeding our children (or ourselves) those foods.  She also says that we need the opportunity to overindulge in food to learn what moderation is and how to achieve it.  As someone that struggled with an eating disorder(s) for the entirety of my teenage years, I feel as though she is spot on with her studies and I am very much *trying* to raise Kennedy with this model.

Homeopathic Medicines and Remedies

As I have gotten a little older and slightly wiser, I have become increasingly more interested in homeopathic medicines and remedies.  While pregnant, I tried very hard to avoid all medicine (over the counter and prescription) at all cost and now seriously contemplate taking any medication unless it is absolutely necessary.  Don't get me wrong, traditional medicine can be a wonderful thing; it saves lives everyday, but the over and misuse of medicine is also a major cause of accidental death in the United States.  Did you know that over 1,500 people have died from taking an appropriate dose of Tylenol in the last 10 years?

With my research, I have found several amazing products that work amazingly well for different everyday ailments.  Check them out!

Elderberry:

Elderberry, also known as Sambucus, is an incredibly powerful antioxidant that comes in several forms and is excellent for a wide variety of problems.  My family has actually started to make fun of me because I have become an elderberry pusher.

Here are a few of the amazing benefits of Elderberry:
  • Boosts Immune System
  • Improves Heart Health
  • Treats all Viral and Bacterial Illnesses, including coughs, colds, flu, and tonsillitis
  • Lowers Cholesterol
  • Improves Vision
  • Is also being used in clinical studies to treat Cancer and HIV
As I said, it comes in several forms: Syrup, Pills (or Soft Gels), and Extract.  The syrup is great for coughs, colds, flu, etcetera.  I take the pills when I feel like I need to boost my immune system or for more of an ongoing use.  One last amazing use for Elderberry; because of its very powerful antioxidant properties, it is an excellent way to feel a bit better if you drank a little too much the night before ;)!  Fun fact: elderberry is the flavor used to make St. Germain liqueur (and Gin too!), my favorite addition to almost any mixed drink.

Coconut Oil:

By now, most people have heard of coconut oil in relation to health food, but I want to reiterate its amazing properties.  Coconut oil is actually solid at room temperature, but melts to a liquid very quickly with a small amount of heat.  At first glance, this oil could seem like an odd choice for a health food because of its very high amount of saturated fat.  However, the type of saturated fat contained in coconut oil (Lauric Acid) is an HDL fat (good type) and can reduce cholesterol and is also very easily accessible to our bodies as a source of energy.  Here are a few of its benefits:
  • Promotes Weight Loss
  • Can Improve or Reverse Alzheimer's Disease
  • Improves Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
  • Improves or Heals Many Skin Diseases including Eczema, Acne, Fungal Infections, Keratosis Polaris, Psoriasis, and Rosecea
  • Provides Peak Performance Energy
  • Kills Candida Fungus
  • Helps with Hypothyroidism
  • Conditions and Strengthens Hair; Kills Lice, Improves Dandruff
  • Fights off Bacterial and Viral Infections
I use coconut oil often as a substitute for butter or oil in cooking.  Kennedy, my husband, and I all have a mild form of eczema that we treat with generous amounts of coconut oil in lieu of lotion.  It has truly become a staple in our household!  A few tips: buy Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil (Organic if you prefer) in a glass jar… this is the highest quality form of the product and glass protects the oil without leaching chemicals into it.

Essential Oils:

I have recently become interested in essential oils and their vast array of types and uses.  I can admit that I did not delve into this realm quickly simply because it is very overwhelming to research.  My interest peaked because many people believe that essential oils are "nature's best kept secret."  These oils can be used for everything and can treat anything.  They can be used for medicinal reasons, for mood altering/boosting, cleaning, detoxifying, or simply to fragrance your house.  They are completely natural, completely non-toxic to our bodies/safe for use around children/pets, and have many benefits with very few side effects.  One tip: you MUST use therapeutic grade oils to reap their benefits.  I love Young Living for the quality and variety of their products.
  • Lavender- Good for everything.  This would be my first recommendation for anyone starting their oil journey.  Lavender is used for improving sleep, hair loss, burns, nervous tension, respiratory infections, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, PMS, skin conditions, and cholesterol reduction.  It can be diffused in a diffuser, applied directly to skin, or even ingested.  Like all essential oils, a little goes a long way (2-4 drops!).
  • Peace & Calming- This is a blend oil that is absolutely amazing.  It helps with insomnia, anxiety, depression, and promotes a healthy nervous system.  I use this for myself, my husband, and Kennedy anytime we are restless.  It is great to help your baby sleep a little better (probably the best use!).  I love to take it with me when traveling because it can be hard to sleep well in a different place.
  • Thieves- This is an excellent blend oil that is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and antiseptic.  Thieves will kill over 99.9% of airborne bacteria in less than 12 minutes!  It is most popularly used when you or another family member has a cold, flu, or other illness (diffuse it!).  It can also be used for headaches, an immune stimulant, toothaches, disinfectant, air and laundry freshener, or household cleaner.
  • Valor- Often referred to as the "chiropractor in a bottle" because it aligns our physical, mental, and emotional bodies with our body.  It is used for scoliosis, depression, nervous system, supporting immunity, ADD, conditions of the spine or skeletal structure, and stress.  It is truly an amazing mood booster!
  • Purification- This is an amazing oil that eliminates home and/or pet odors.  It is also an antiseptic so it is great to diffuse for colds/flu/etcetera, kills mold, helps insect bites and works as a repellant, sterilizes wounds and cuts, neutralizes poison in insect bites, and works well as a household cleaner.
  • R.C.- A blend oil that helps bronchitis, allergies, colds, cold sores, pneumonia, sinusitis, sore throat, mucus, reparatory inflammation and infections, sleep apnea, snoring, acne, bacterial and viral infections, chronic inflammation, coughs, breathing, emphysema, fungus, Lyme disease, mononucleosis, among other things.  It is great to diffuse or apply directly to the skin.

The Well Organized Baby

I am immensely more organized as a mom than I ever was pre-Kennedy.  I find a sense of peace in organizing among the chaos that inevitably surrounds due to the mass amount of toys and gear strung from one corner of my house to the other.  Below are a few products that have made my life a little easier.

Kidco Bath Storage Basket

I love the bath storage basket because:
  1. The suction cups on wall organizers never seem to work.
  2. Kennedy can take the toys out of this organizer and put them back in by herself!  (Love this!)
  3. Tons of storage
  4. Expandable to fit any size tub

Baby Sock Organizers

I was obsessed with Trumpette socks from birth-11 months.  Socks that look like shoes are the perfect accessory to complete every baby outfit.  With all of the colors and styles, I wanted a quick way to match a each pair with the day's outfit.  Over the door jewelry organizers from the Container Store work perfectly for displaying each pair neatly.

80-Pocket Hanging Jewelry Organizer (used for hanging socks)

Baby Headband Organizers

"Cylinder-type" headband organizers are not ideal for crochet baby headbands.  Cylinder's can stretch the headband and they also make it difficult to remove or replace on the organizer.  I found these on Etsy and they have been a lifesaver!  The lady who makes these will put create one with the colors of your choice and pricing is based on how many headbands you would like the organizer to hold.  These could definitely be a good DIY project if you have the time!

EverlastingbySue Headband Organizers
Product Rating: ♛♛♛♛♛
Price: Approximately $15

Stuffed Animal Organizer:

This one I haven't tried yet because I am still waiting on my husband to DIY it.  Kennedy has become obsessed with stuffed animals and at 18 months, I am already feeling overwhelmed at how many we have accumulated!  I absolutely love this idea for stuffed animal storage because your child can easily put them away or access them by themselves (hammocks, hanging clothes pins, or storage bins usually put toys out of reach for your child).  The only thing I don't like about "The Zoo" is the price.  $160 for a few 2x4's and bungee cords seems a little obscene.  I guess we will see if it is really worth the price once we attempt to bust out the saw and cordless drill!

Eco Friendly Disposable Diapers

Let's face it, sometimes disposable diapers are necessary and are certainly convenient.  Most moms don't even think about using cloth, which I get.  It is extra work, and sometimes dealing with our child's excrements is, well, smelly.  I really love using cloth, but when we go out of town without access to a washer and dryer, using disposables are a means to an end.  However, like most moms, I want to use the best diapers that I can find, so see my find below!

I found Naty by Nature Babycare from one of my favorite websites, Ecomom.com.  I truly trust this website and its products, which is something that is often hard to come by.  All of the products on the site are both Eco-Friendly and ethically moral companies, plus they give back a portion of the proceeds to charity.  I have definitely found that these diapers live up to their rave online reviews.    Naturally breathable, chlorine and fragrance free, GM free corn based film, and made of natural and renewable material, a mom couldn't ask for much more in a disposable diaper.  I have found these diapers to be extremely absorbent and I love that they have a very simple pattern (I like the green leaves much better than the Sesame Street print on most Pampers!).  My only advice would be to buy a size up if you are in between sizes, they run a bit small!

Naty by Nature Babycare Diapers
Product Rating: ♛♛♛♛♛
Price: $43.99 for a case (case size depends on diaper size 100-160 diapers per case)
Eco Option?: Most Eco-Friendly Diaper on the Market
Where to Find: Ecomom.com or Diapers.com (free shipping over $50)

To go with your Eco-friendly diapers, Water Wipes are the "World's Purest Baby Wipe."  I love these wipes because most commercially available wipes have tons of chemicals that are used to clean baby's bottom when all you really need is H2O!  Water Wipes are 99.9% Water with 0.1% Fruit Extract.  They are great for babies with allergies and can even be used on the newest of new babies.  I also love that they are, obviously, scentless which is great when I use them to clean Kennedy's face or hands after a messy meal.

Sleep Begets Sleep

After a long hiatus from my blog, I guess the best way to come back is with a topic I feel very strongly about; SLEEP.  Sleep is essential to life and is one of the most common sources of anxiety for all expectant parents.  I know that it was the thing my husband worried most about when I was pregnant (as I am writing this, having been awake for 3 hours already, my husband is still snoring in bed), he does not function without approximately 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night and babies notoriously mess that up.  I read countless books before Kennedy was born and found that I could expect for her to sleep well at night by the 4 month mark...which I found relieving.  Until the four month mark, I could "sleep when the baby sleeps" and drink copious amounts of coffee in order to survive...sounds like a plan!  I had it all figured out until, of course, Kennedy was born.  After that, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and threw all of my previous knowledge out the window.  Feed-Wake-Sleep Cycle, "Pausing" before responding to cries (therefore making 'Cry It Out' unnecessary), Keeping baby in her crib (not giving into co-sleeping), circadian rhythms; these were all great in print, but implementing them was a completely different story.  How could I let her cry for a few minutes before responding?  She would wake up my sleepyhead husband!  Maybe she is hungry (and needs to eat NOW)!  She will think I don't love her!  I have absolutely no idea what I am doing (how could anyone allow me to take care of an infant?!)!

At six months, Kennedy was not napping at all (15-20 minute naps were lucky) and waking up hourly at night (in our bed...co-sleeping is a sleep deprived mother's only chance for survival).  Kennedy was delirious but seemingly okay, but I, on the other hand, was a mess.  So tired, so stressed (couldn't get anything done because she wasn't napping), and feeling like such a failure.  Babies need sleep... it is much more important to them than it is to me, and I was feeling it.  I felt like a failure because I was breaking away from the values I held about the kind of mother I wanted to be versus the mother I perceived myself being (the root of mommy guilt).  I decided that Kennedy needed to cry it out, which was a terrifying prospective...was I doing the right thing?  Was this going to permanently scar my daughter?  As a psychology major and a woman who has been in therapy several times, Kennedy's emotional well being is of utmost importance to me.  But I also knew that not sleeping was bad for her physical and emotional well being, not to mention my physical and emotional well being.  I brainstormed and (arbitrarily) decided that her bedtime should be 8:30pm.  This time gave us time as a family together every evening, time to eat dinner out (if we wanted), and set her wake time to be between 7-8am, which allowed me to "sleep in" (a relative term as a mom).  She cried it out when she was a little over 7 months old, and only woke once that night!  Once a night wakings at this point were common; I would get up, feed her, and rock her back to sleep.  Life was seemingly going toward a good track...for about a month.  Once a night turned to twice a night, turned to three, four, five, and she was back in bed with us.  Desperate, I reached out to the doula that had helped us through L&D, and she recommended I hire Jennifer Metter, a sleep expert.  Sleep expert?!  I didn't know such a person existed!  I could see a light at the end of the tunnel!

Jennifer aka Jenni June, is based in LA and is a certified sleep expert.  She boasts a 100% success rate, which made me even more hopeful.  After filling out an extensive survey, we had our initial phone consultation.  Here is the plan (for a 9 month old) that she presented us with:

Wake: No earlier than 6am, no later than 7am
Nap 1: Around 9am, must have at least 1 hour in crib
Nap 2: Around 12:30-1pm (Depending on Nap 1 duration), Wake must be NO later than 3pm
Night Sleep: 4 hours after wake from Nap 2 (Approximately 6-7pm)

If a strict schedule overwhelms you, I felt the same way at first. The idea that I could only leave my house for (seemingly) very short periods of time about twice a day felt very restrictive and eating out at night was going to be very difficult with a 7pm bedtime.  Not to mention, Kennedy was involved in baby classes that directly interfered with this schedule!  Sleeping in the car or in a stroller are not considered restorative forms of sleep (Kennedy won't sleep this way anyway, but I know many children do!) and therefore discouraged except for very rare exceptions.  I think every woman before having a baby knows that when having a baby your life is no longer your own, but knowing it and living it are two very different things.  You can expect the impending changes on your life, but that doesn't necessarily make them easier to deal with.

Even though I was a bit overwhelmed, I implemented it right away and gave it the best effort I could.  The first step, to stop *rescuing* her between bedtime and 6am, and to stop *rescuing* her if nap time was less than 1 hour.  Kennedy knew (by previous experience) that I would eventually give into her middle of the night crying if she cried *longer* and *louder*, which was very hard to listen to (this is something that happens a lot… if you decide to let your child cry-it-out and then give in at any point, your child has now learned your breaking point… i.e. "If I cry for X amount of time, mom will come get me and I don't have to sleep!").  I stuck to my guns and in about two weeks, we had a sleeping baby.  It was absolutely incredible.  12 hours at night, two naps that were at least 1hr, and usually they were closer to 1.5-2hrs.  And going out to dinner?   Now, I gladly trade going out to dinner for *four* uninterrupted hours of: time with my husband, a long bubble bath, reading a good book, or plenty of time to Keep up with the Kardashians.  When we implemented the plan, my husband and I decided that the money we would save on eating out several times a week affords us extra money to pay a babysitter once a week so that we can have dinner *on our own,* which is much more enjoyable!

Quick FYI: This schedule is based on Circadian Rhythms.  Why is 7am waking and 7pm sleeping important?  Because it has do to with the natural rhythm of the body in relation to the sun.  Once your child (and you) is on this schedule, you will recognize your urge to grab a cup of coffee or a Red Bull around the same times that your child is needing a nap.  Coincidence?  I think probably not. Interesting Fact: Jennifer also informed me that sleeping disorders were not nearly as prevalent before the invention and common usage of electricity.

So, a few tips if you are having sleep issues with your child (and let's face it, almost everyone does at some point):

  • Start a schedule (for sleeping and eating too!) very early on.  Stick to it at all costs, it will make your life so much easier.
  • Between 4 to 6 months (sometimes earlier), babies start to *learn* that if they wake up and cry, someone will get them.  This is great for when they are first born, however, at a point parents (myself included) start to rob their children of the ability to learn how to go to sleep and *stay* asleep.  This is a skill that you learn, not something we are born innately with.
  • Put your baby down drowsy but awake.  Everyone has heard this and it is absolutely true.  It is so so so important.
  • Have a routine associated with bedtime and nap time.  Make them different and stick to them.
  • Sleeping on a schedule based on circadian rhythms really helps to create a well rested child.  Studies show time and time again that children who go to sleep earlier, sleep longer.
  • Naps take longer to come together than night sleep.  Be more patient with this when working on a good schedule.
  • If you are stressed whenever implementing a new schedule, have someone babysit and take a little time to yourself.  When your child isn't sleeping, it is so stressful and you need energy to recharge.  Trust me, I know!
  • Look for transition times (baby needing fewer naps) around 8-9months and 15-18months.
  • If your child has had trouble sleeping lately, put them to bed early.  This is my "go-to" way to help or fix sleep problems.  It seems counter intuitive that your child would sleep better and longer if they go to bed earlier, but sleep does beget sleep.  I have put Kennedy to bed as early as 5:30 before (and she still slept until almost 7am) :)!
  • Dinner is best approximately 2 hours before bedtime (I know that this means you eat around 5pm, which is very difficult for most people).  Having a big meal and then going straight to bed can cause night sleep to be interrupted.  This is not as true for day sleep which is less restorative than night sleep.  If you are having a lot of trouble with night sleep, this may be something to take into consideration.
  • After you have been on the schedule for a few weeks, it is much easier to read your child and learn what times *exactly* work best for them.  While bedtime and wake time should be very rigid and hold true for all children, nap times (in my opinion) can be a vary a little between children.  Kennedy liked for nap #1 to be around 8:30am (even if she didn't wake up until 7am) and this was usually her long nap of the day.  Because of this, nap #2 could often be pushed until closer to 1:30.
  • Obviously, if your child is sick exceptions to the schedule need to be made.  But chances are if your child is sick, you will know this before they go to bed.
  • Optimal sleep temperature is between 68-71 degrees.  Buy a fan for your child's room if you don't want to keep your whole house this cool.
  • Before starting your child on a sleep schedule, make sure that you can dedicate 4 weeks to be at home and stick to it.  Starting a routine while on vacation or when you are about to go on a trip isn't ideal.  When you start the routine, try not to make any exceptions for a month (this includes naps in the car or stroller)
  • Sleep is to the brain what food is to the body.  Your child needs quality sleep and a lot of it, just the way that they need a healthy variety of food.

Sample Schedules for Ages:

Between 4-7 months- 3 Naps/Day

Wake: Between 6-7am
Nap 1- Around 9am
Nap 2- Around 12pm
Nap 3- Around 2:30pm (This is usually a shorter nap than the first two, wake by 3:30pm)
Bedtime- Around 7-7:30pm

This schedule I am not as familiar with because we had so much trouble during this time.  Waking times should be about 2-2.5hrs at this age, so if your baby wakes at 6am, nap might be around 8-8:30am.  If his/her nap is 1.5hrs or less, the next nap and/or bedtime may need to be moved up accordingly.

Between 7-18months- 2 Naps/Day

Wake: Between 6-7am
Nap 1- Around 9am
Nap 2- Around 12:30-1pm, must wake by 3pm
Bedtime- Around or before 7pm
** During Transition, baby may need an early bedtime to help combat over tiredness!  Naps need to be at least 1hr in duration.

18months+- 1 Nap/Day

Wake- Between 6-7am
Nap- Around 12:30pm, must wake by 3pm
Bedtime- Around or before 7pm
**Try to make the nap approximately 2-2.5hrs to allow for a pleasant afternoon!

If all else fails, call Jennifer Metter.  She was an absolutely invaluable resource to our family and definitely one of the best investments we have ever made.  Having her to coach me through implementing the schedule was so comforting and helped me know that I was doing the right thing and the best thing for both Kennedy and our family.  And she was absolutely right.

**Crying it out is not everyone's cup of tea, and it certainly wasn't my first choice in plan of action.  Consult your doctor and follow your instincts when it comes to this.  I can say with confidence that it was the right thing for my daughter and my family, but it may not be right for you.   When implemented consistently it works wonderfully.

The Next Step: Convertible Carseats

Most infant carseats are rated safe for babies up to 30 or 35 pounds, but safe and comfortable, in this case, do not go hand-in-hand.  Infant carseats have the ability to detach the seat from the base making baby more portable.  Convertible carseats have the option to be both rear and forward facing but are stationary within your vehicle.  Infant carseats are necessary and very convenient until your child weighs about 15-18 pounds and can sit up easily by themselves (around 6 months old).  Once they hit these milestones, the infant carrier becomes too heavy to lug around, making it easier to simply bust out an umbrella stroller or put baby in the shopping cart.  Beside the inconvenience due to weight, your child will most likely look somewhat overgrown for the carrier around 9 months.

So on to the important question: What convertible carseat should I buy?

Important things to consider:

  • Safety, Safety, Safety (obviously)
  • LATCH Installation
  • Child Comfort
  • Weight limits for both rear and forward facing
  • Width of carseat
  • Ease of cleaning
  • Eco-Friendly materials
Cutting to the chase, the one carseat that blows it out of the water on all of these point is the Clek Foonf.  Below are the best features about the "Mother of all Carseats"

  • Boasts the revolutionary REACT Safety System
    • This system is integrated into every Foonf carseat and works much like the "crumple zone" in most automobiles on the road today
    • Frame and materials are designed to absorb crash collision, exerting less force on the child
  • Extended rear facing installation.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children stay rear facing as long as possible (By law, Children must be rear facing until 1 year).  The Foonf allows for children up to 50 pounds be rear facing, the highest rear facing weight limit on the market currently.
    • Forward facing up to 65 pounds and/or 49 inches tall
  • Sub-structure is made of steel and magnesium, making it very, very sturdy
  • Energy-absorbing foam layers
  • Anti-Rebound Bar improves stability
  • LATCH System
  • Narrow Width, at 17 inches wide three carseats can fit in a second row
  • Crypton Fabrics are certified "Greenguard" making them stain and water resistant
  • Easy recline in forward-facing mode
  • Approved for Airline Travel
  • The entire seat is Recyclable!  WOW!
The Clek Foonf is widely regarded as the safest convertible carseat on the market currently.  This is evident when testing it out; the steel frame is prominent and the weight of the seat simply feels as though it would protect your child as well as any seat possibly could.  It hits all of the items on my consideration list plus some.  Also, despite the crazy name, it is actually made in the USA.  The worst thing about this seat is the price, at $475, it is a hard purchase to stomach.  Try to shop around, eBay can have deals and many websites offer discounts to first time shoppers!  Always look for promo codes!

The Space Saving Bouncing Swing

Baby bouncers and swings are widely regarded as necessities for birth through 6 months.  Bouncers are absolutely fabulous for keeping baby safe and happy while mom's hands are busy.  Swings can calm a fussy baby or help put a tired baby to sleep.  Both of these items take up A LOT of room, and with the plethora of other baby gadgets that are necessary, it is not practical to have two additional large pieces of baby paraphernalia cramped into your house.  This is where the 4moms Mamaroo fits in; a bouncer and swing in one reasonably sized contraption.

The Mamaroo boasts that it moves more like a caregiver would; bouncing and moving side to side rather than vibrating or swinging.  The seat has five different motions that simulate a Car Ride (figure 8 motion), Ocean (circular motion), Kangaroo (bouncing), Rock-a-bye (up and down), and Tree Swing (down and up).  These motions are also available in five different speeds.  The base dons a noise machine (nature sounds) and an auxiliary plug for an iPod, iPhone, or other MP3 player.  Lastly, the seat easily reclines for maximal comfort and at a weight of 20 pounds with the size of a conventional bouncer, it is pretty easy to move around the house wherever you are.

I purchased this product when Kennedy was three months old and I wish that I had it sooner.  This was a wonderful help while I cooked or did any quick chore around the house.  The motion kept Kennedy content and I loved the built in audio system.  The design of this item is also fabulous, it looks *almost* like a piece of modern art in your house, and when everything else looks like Sesame Street had a field day in your living room, that is a breath of fresh air.  My only complaint about the product is that I wish that the motion was a little more dramatic and speedy.
